Elon Musk believes that the new feature “should help a lot with spam bots.”

In a surprising move, X, previously known as Twitter, is introducing a game-changing feature that allows users to block unverified accounts from replying to their posts.

When composing a tweet, users will now see a “Who can reply?” setting. The default option is set to "Everyone," but users can restrict replies to only accounts they follow or mention in the tweet.

The most limiting option is to allow replies from only verified accounts, which X sees as a potential guard against online harassment, trolling, and the spread of false information.

Mr. Musk has been vocal about his belief that enabling only verified accounts to reply could help reduce spam bots. However, some experts argue this theory is flawed, as verified bot accounts have also been identified on the site.

X supporters view this major change as a useful tool to maintain the quality of interactions and curb abuse.

Critics, however, have raised concerns about the feature inadvertently enabling the spread of misinformation.

For example, if a user tweets false information and limits replies to verified accounts only, it could stop non-verified users from directly correcting them. While critics could still quote tweet to share accurate information, the limited replies may allow misinformation to gain more traction.

This change has sparked a debate around the impact of restricting access to replies, a basic feature. Some argue it could divide the user experience between paying and non-paying users.

The "Who can reply?" options align with the platform’s push to grow its subscriber base following the launch of its Blue verification subscription service.

However, completely limiting non-paying users' ability to participate in discussions raises questions around access and equality on the platform.

As X continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this new feature will impact the dynamics of the platform. While the intention behind restricting replies to verified users is to create a safer and more reliable environment, it is essential to strike a balance that ensures diverse perspectives and open dialogue are not compromised.
