FALLS CHURCH, Va., May 22, 2025 — K-12 schools across the United States and Canada can apply for grants of up to $5,000 to improve or launch recycling programs for food and beverage cartons, the Carton Council announced today.

The 2025 grant program, running through May 31, is open to public and private schools, districts, school boards, local governments, and affiliated organizations. Applicants must confirm carton recycling access with their local waste services and secure administrative approval before applying.

Cartons are widely used in schools—averaging 75,000 per campus annually—yet recycling participation remains low. In the U.S., only about 10% of primary and secondary schools recycle cartons. In Canada, cartons make up over 9% of waste in elementary schools sent to landfills.

“By sorting empty milk, juice, and other cartons, schools contribute to ensuring these cartons are recycled into new products while reducing landfill waste,” said Jordan Fengel, executive director of the Carton Council. “Beyond the environmental benefits, schools may also see cost savings on waste hauling fees while providing valuable hands-on learning opportunities in sustainable practices.”

Funds can be used to purchase collection bins, sorting stations, signage, and educational materials or to support student-led environmental initiatives. Previous recipients have used similar support to create or strengthen recycling programs, reduce waste and engage students in sustainability education.

Selected schools will be notified in June, with funds disbursed soon after. Guidance and resources are available to assist schools in implementing or improving their recycling efforts.

Schools in the U.S. can apply at RecycleCartons.com/schools, while Canadian applicants can find application details at RecycleCartons.ca.

Beyond the environmental benefits, schools may also see cost savings on waste hauling fees while providing valuable hands-on learning opportunities in sustainable practices.
