Canopy Aerospace & Defense is a U.S. manufacturer of advanced materials and specialized components for the aerospace, space and defense industries. The company produces thermal protection systems, engineered ceramics, composite structures and flexible insulation products for launch vehicles, spacecraft, aircraft, propulsion systems and naval vessels. Its manufacturing capabilities include materials research, engineering, prototyping, precision machining, component assembly and refurbishment. Canopy operates through businesses including Canopy Technologies, Hera Technologies and MSM Industries, serving applications that require resistance to extreme temperatures, electrical insulation, radio-frequency transmission and demanding structural performance.
Thermal protection is a major part of Canopy’s aerospace business. Launch vehicles and spacecraft encounter intense heating during propulsion and atmospheric re-entry, requiring materials that resist high temperatures while limiting heat transfer to sensitive structures. Canopy develops thermal protection systems for launch and re-entry applications, including reusable hardware designed for repeated flight cycles. Its capabilities include ultra-high-temperature ceramics, ceramic additive manufacturing, thermal analysis and specialized coatings. The company also manufactures components for hypersonic platforms, where nose cones, leading edges and other exposed surfaces must withstand aerodynamic heating. Material selection and production methods depend on each component’s temperature limits, structural loads and intended service life.
Ceramic Engineering and Thermal Management
Canopy manufactures technical ceramics for aerospace, defense, power electronics and energy applications. These materials can provide electrical insulation while transferring heat away from sensitive components, making them suitable for high-power electronics, propulsion equipment and radio-frequency systems. Products include ceramic components for thermal management, dielectric radomes that allow radio-frequency signals to pass through protective structures, and parts designed for high-temperature applications. Materials research and engineering services help customers select compositions and component designs for specific operating requirements. Ceramic additive manufacturing enables intricate geometries that can be difficult to produce through conventional machining or forming methods.
Automated coating technology forms another part of Canopy’s manufacturing capabilities. The company has developed a robotic spray-coating system that uses computer vision, sensors and closed-loop controls to regulate coating application. In September 2024, the U.S. Air Force awarded Canopy a $2.8 million contract to accelerate commercialization of thermal protection technologies for hypersonic and re-entry systems. A separate Air Force Research Laboratory award in January 2025 covered additively manufactured silicon nitride radomes for next-generation hypersonic systems. These programs connect Canopy’s ceramic engineering and automated production capabilities with defense applications requiring specialized materials and components. Commercial use depends on qualification, repeatable manufacturing, and demonstrated performance under the intended operating conditions.
Aerospace and Maritime Manufacturing
Canopy’s manufacturing operations include precision machining, composite fabrication, flexible insulation products, thermal protection systems and component assembly. Hera Technologies manufactures aerospace components, including composite structures and flexible insulation products. MSM Industries produces precision-machined parts and provides assembly, systems integration and kitting services. Canopy Technologies conducts materials research, engineering and manufacturing in Littleton, Colorado. Together, these businesses cover multiple stages of component production, from design and fabrication to inspection and assembly. Refurbishment services address reusable aerospace hardware that must be inspected, repaired and prepared for subsequent flights.
In November 2025, Canopy acquired Tods Technology, a United Kingdom-based manufacturer of composite structures and acoustic materials for maritime defense. Tods produces sonar domes, acoustic windows, enclosures and structural components for surface ships and submarines. These products house and protect sonar equipment while meeting the acoustic and structural requirements of naval platforms. The acquisition added marine-composite manufacturing and acoustic engineering to Canopy’s existing aerospace and space capabilities. Tods also provides installation, maintenance and repair services for naval equipment. The transaction expanded Canopy’s manufacturing operations into maritime defense and added products used in naval sensing and acoustic systems.
Satellite Systems and Expansion
In September 2026, Canopy International acquired Aviotec, an Italian supplier of multilayer insulation blankets and electrical harnesses for satellites and spacecraft. Founded in 2008 and based in Turin, Aviotec provides design, engineering analysis, manufacturing and integration services for institutional and commercial space programs. Multilayer insulation blankets regulate heat transfer in spacecraft exposed to substantial temperature variations. Electrical harnesses route power and signals between spacecraft systems and require precise manufacturing and integration. Aviotec adds satellite insulation and electrical interconnection capabilities to Canopy’s existing work in thermal protection, ceramics and engineered materials, expanding the group’s presence in the European space supply chain.
The transaction was completed through Canopy International, the group’s European platform based in Amsterdam. Aviotec retains its Turin operations and local leadership while gaining access to additional engineering, research and manufacturing resources. The acquisition followed the purchase of Tods Technology in 2025 and investments in aerospace insulation production through Hera Technologies’ California and Florida operations. Those products include multilayer insulation blankets, thermal covers and flexible insulation jackets for launch vehicles, spacecraft, avionics and propulsion equipment. Canopy also has a role in current spacecraft re-entry research: in October 2026, a Varda Space Industries mission featured Canopy thermal protection materials and fiber-optic sensors intended to collect data during hypersonic flight and re-entry. The acquisitions and flight research extend Canopy’s work across spacecraft insulation, re-entry materials, ceramic components and maritime composites. Commercial growth will depend on customer qualification, repeat orders, production reliability and on-time delivery.
