SME Business Review reached out to Tulika Raj, co-founder and CEO of SunGreenH2, for an interview to discuss the company’s innovative approach to green hydrogen production, its role in advancing sustainable energy solutions, and the vision driving its growth. Here’s what Tulika had to say.

Interview Excerpts

What inspired you to focus on green hydrogen production?

The need for sustainable energy solutions has always been at the heart of what I do. I’ve worked in energy and environmental sectors for years, and I saw how critical green hydrogen could be in transitioning away from fossil fuels. It’s clean, versatile, and scalable. We wanted to create something that could address not just environmental concerns but also provide a practical, cost-effective energy alternative.

SunGreenH2’s approach to hydrogen production emphasizes renewable energy. How do you ensure this process remains both efficient and scalable?

Efficiency and scalability are key to making green hydrogen viable. At SunGreenH2, we’ve focused on advancing electrolyzer technology to reduce energy input while maximizing output. We’ve engineered our systems to adapt to different scales, whether it’s for smaller communities or large industrial operations. Our goal is to ensure our solutions meet varying demands without compromising sustainability or efficiency.

What role does collaboration play in SunGreenH2’s success?

Collaboration is central to everything we do. We work with renewable energy providers, governments, and research institutions to create a robust ecosystem. These partnerships allow us to refine our technology, expand our reach, and align with public policy goals. It’s not just about creating innovative solutions but also ensuring those solutions are integrated effectively into the energy systems of the future.

How does SunGreenH2 contribute to addressing global energy disparities?

Energy equity is something we’re passionate about. By leveraging renewable-powered hydrogen, we can provide clean and affordable energy to regions that have traditionally relied on costly or polluting sources. It’s about creating solutions that are inclusive and impactful, helping underserved communities achieve reliable access to energy while reducing environmental harm.

What challenges have you encountered in positioning green hydrogen as a mainstream energy source?

Educating stakeholders has been one of the challenges. Green hydrogen is still a relatively new concept for many industries, and there’s a need to demonstrate its long-term economic and environmental benefits. Another challenge is the upfront infrastructure cost, but as the technology becomes more efficient and scalable, the costs will continue to come down. Convincing people to invest in the future rather than just the present is always a challenge, but it’s a conversation worth having.

How do you see SunGreenH2 contributing to the broader shift toward global sustainability?

We see our work as a piece of the larger puzzle. The energy transition requires multiple solutions, and green hydrogen is one of the most promising. By offering a clean, efficient, and scalable alternative, we’re enabling industries and governments to move closer to net-zero targets. It’s not just about what we’re building; it’s about how it integrates into the broader energy ecosystem and supports global goals.

Could you share more about the technological advancements your team has made in electrolyzer design?

Our focus has been on increasing efficiency while reducing costs. We’ve refined the materials and engineering behind the electrolyzers to make them more energy-efficient and durable. This means they require less electricity to produce hydrogen, which lowers operational costs. The improved efficiency also makes it easier to scale production, whether for a small local grid or a large industrial plant.

What motivates you personally in this journey toward green energy?

For me, it’s about leaving a positive impact. Climate change is not just an environmental issue; it’s an economic and social one. Creating a solution that addresses these interconnected challenges motivates me. I also think about the future we’re building for the next generation. It’s about more than business—it’s about creating something meaningful and lasting.

What are some of the economic benefits SunGreenH2 brings to businesses and governments adopting green hydrogen?

Businesses and governments see value in reduced energy costs, especially as fossil fuel prices fluctuate. Green hydrogen also opens up new revenue streams, whether through energy exports or creating jobs in clean energy sectors. Governments integrating green hydrogen into their strategies can also meet sustainability goals while fostering economic growth.

Where do you see SunGreenH2 in the next five years?

Our vision is to be a global leader in green hydrogen production. In five years, I see us expanding into more regions, scaling our technology further, and playing a significant role in reducing carbon emissions across industries. We want to keep innovating while ensuring that green hydrogen is accessible to all who need it. It’s about scaling impact, not just operations.
