Addressing this persistent friction, Santhosh Kumar, founder of Vigil Inc, launched TravelCall.app, a platform built to simplify and standardize communication across the travel ecosystem.
With a background spanning over two decades in digital services, software development, and telecommunications, Santhosh’s journey from running a modest cyber café in Bangalore to establishing a global communication platform is both inspiring and indicative of his commitment to innovation.
SME BUSINESS REVIEW spoke to Mr. Kumar about the challenges of international communication for travelers and how TravelCall is addressing them. He explained that the platform was built to simplify cross-border connectivity and integrate effectively into the broader travel ecosystem. Here’s what he had to say.
Interview Excerpts
When was TravelCall founded, and what market gap or vision inspired its launch?
TravelCall was founded in November 2025 to address the disconnect between the rapid advancements in global mobility and the slower evolution of international communication solutions. While travelers have embraced digital tools for booking, payments, and navigation, real-time communication is still largely tied to outdated telecom models.
TravelCall is designed to bridge this gap by offering a data-first communication platform that caters to the needs of modern travelers and service providers alike, enabling reliable communication across borders without depending on traditional roaming structures.
Travelers often face expensive and unreliable calls overseas. How does TravelCall make international calling more affordable while maintaining quality?
By leveraging optimized data-based voice routing and establishing global carrier interconnections, TravelCall ensures high-quality calls without the exorbitant costs associated with traditional roaming. Operating over Wi-Fi and mobile data, the platform eliminates many of the expenses tied to legacy voice routing, providing users with a consistent and affordable communication experience.
TravelCall serves travelers globally. How do you adapt to the needs of frequent versus occasional travelers?
Understanding the diverse needs of travelers, TravelCall offers solutions tailored to both frequent and occasional users. Frequent travelers benefit from consistent communication quality and integration into their workflows, while occasional travelers enjoy a user-friendly interface that requires minimal setup. Additionally, by collaborating with hotels, travel agents, and other service providers, TravelCall ensures seamless communication throughout the travel journey.
What sets TravelCall apart from other international calling services?
Unlike traditional calling services that focus solely on end-users, TravelCall is designed to provide a comprehensive communication layer for the travel ecosystem. By integrating with hotels, travel agents, and other service providers, the platform facilitates reliable interactions between travelers and businesses, improving the overall travel experience.
TravelCall relies on Wi-Fi and mobile data. How do you optimize these technologies to ensure reliability worldwide?
We approach reliability from multiple layers, including intelligent routing, carrier-grade interconnect relationships, and continuous quality monitoring across global networks.
Because data network quality varies across regions, the platform is designed to dynamically optimize routing paths, codec selection, and call handling based on real-time network conditions. We also maintain strong relationships with global voice carriers to ensure consistent call completion quality and overall communication stability.
Alongside communication services, TravelCall also offers global data connectivity through eSIM as an alternative data access option for travelers when Wi-Fi is not available. The goal is not to position TravelCall as a standalone data provider, but to ensure travelers have continuous access to communication services throughout their journey, including when they are moving between locations or operating outside Wi-Fi environments. This helps create a stronger sense of safety, connection, and reliability for travelers in foreign destinations.
In many cases, communication reliability is now becoming as important as physical travel logistics. From a travel ecosystem perspective, this continuity becomes especially important when communication is linked to guest support, travel coordination, or time-sensitive service interactions.
TravelCall offers access without complex onboarding. Why did you choose this model?
Modern users expect immediate access to services. TravelCall’s streamlined onboarding process eliminates unnecessary complexities, allowing users to connect instantly. This approach not only enhances user satisfaction but also facilitates integration with partner ecosystems, enabling service providers to offer communication solutions directly to their customers.
What are TravelCall’s plans and outlook for the next five years?
Over the next five years, we plan to expand TravelCall from a traveler communication solution into a broader communication layer for the global travel ecosystem. We are strengthening our global carrier relationships, improving network intelligence, enabling local connectivity, and enhancing communication reliability across regions. As global travel becomes more digital and service-driven, communication is becoming a core part of the travel experience rather than a separate utility.
From an ecosystem perspective, we are exploring partnerships across the travel industry, including hotels, travel agencies, tour operators, travel guides, and digital travel content platforms. The long-term goal is to allow communication services to be offered as part of the overall travel experience through partner-led distribution models.
Under the broader technology and telecom infrastructure vision of Vigil Inc, TravelCall will continue to focus on building scalable communication infrastructure designed for a data-first, globally mobile world.
