SME Business Review recently spoke with Brett O'Farrell, co-founder of KatKin, to discuss the company's innovative approach to pet nutrition, its influence on the pet food industry, and what the future holds for KatKin. Here's what he had to say.

Interview Excerpts

KatKin offers a unique approach to pet nutrition. What motivated you to create this service, and what sets KatKin apart from traditional pet food companies?

The motivation behind KatKin stemmed from the recognition that traditional pet food wasn't always meeting the nutritional needs of cats. Many cat foods are packed with fillers, preservatives, and low-quality ingredients that can affect a cat's health over time. We wanted to create a solution that prioritizes high-quality, natural ingredients, and the needs of individual cats. KatKin offers fresh, human-grade meals tailored to each cat’s specific needs, something traditional pet food companies simply don’t offer. What sets us apart is our commitment to freshness, personalization, and delivering meals that are not only nutritious but also delicious.

The subscription model plays a key role for KatKin. How does it help deliver value to cat owners?

The subscription model is key to making high-quality meals consistently available to our customers. By delivering freshly made meals directly to their doors, we eliminate the hassle of meal planning and shopping. It also ensures that our customers always have the right portion sizes for their cats, reducing food waste and making feeding easier for busy cat owners. The convenience of this model allows cat owners to focus on their pets’ health without having to worry about sourcing quality ingredients or preparing meals themselves.

Could you tell us more about how KatKin tailors meals for each cat?

Absolutely. At KatKin, we believe that every cat is unique, so we take a personalized approach to meal planning. When a customer signs up, they complete a short survey where they provide details about their cat's age, weight, breed, and any specific health concerns. Based on this information, we recommend a meal plan tailored to their cat’s nutritional requirements. This personalized approach helps us ensure that each cat is getting the exact nutrients it needs to stay healthy and happy.

Fresh, human-grade food is a key feature of KatKin. What drives your commitment to such high-quality standards?

Freshness and quality are incredibly important to us because we understand the direct impact food has on a cat's health. Traditional pet food is often full of fillers, artificial additives, and preservatives, which don't offer the same health benefits as fresh, whole foods. By using high-quality, ethically sourced ingredients in small batches, we can ensure that our meals are both nutritious and flavorful. Our meals don’t contain any unnecessary chemicals, which means cats get a better, healthier meal that promotes long-term wellbeing.

Sustainability seems to be another important focus for KatKin. How do you incorporate sustainability into your business model?

Sustainability is a core value for us at KatKin. We understand that pet food production can have a significant environmental impact, so we strive to minimize our footprint in every way possible. First, we use eco-friendly packaging to reduce waste. We also deliver meals on a subscription basis, which helps cut down on excess packaging and transportation emissions. Moreover, by creating freshly prepared meals in the right portion sizes for each cat, we help reduce food waste, ensuring that nothing goes to waste. It's all about being mindful of the planet while still offering top-quality food for cats.

The cat food industry is highly competitive. How do you see KatKin’s role in the market?

KatKin has carved out a unique space in the market by focusing on fresh, personalized nutrition for cats. The pet food industry has traditionally been dominated by large companies that mass-produce food, but there’s been a shift toward healthier, more sustainable options. We are positioning ourselves at the forefront of this shift, catering to cat owners who are more informed and conscious about what they feed their pets. We see ourselves as part of a larger movement that is changing how people view pet nutrition, and we’re excited to be part of this change.

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs looking to enter the pet food space?

My advice would be to stay focused on quality and your mission. The pet food space is highly competitive, but if you can offer something that genuinely benefits the health and wellbeing of pets, you’ll stand out. Also, don’t be afraid to innovate. The pet industry is evolving, and there’s a growing market for healthier, more sustainable options. Be prepared to adapt and learn as you go, and always keep the needs of the animals at the center of everything you do.

What do you see for the future of KatKin and the pet food industry in general?

The future for KatKin is really exciting. We’re constantly innovating and looking for new ways to improve the quality of our meals and make them even more accessible. We also plan to expand our product offerings and reach more cat owners who are looking for a healthier, more personalized approach to feeding their pets. As for the industry, I think we’re going to see more companies moving towards fresh, sustainable options for pets. Pet owners are becoming increasingly aware of the impact of diet on their pets’ health, and that’s going to continue driving demand for higher-quality, ethically produced pet food.
