What motivated you to start Marvel Fusion?

I have always been passionate about finding solutions to the world’s energy challenges. The need for clean, abundant energy is growing every day, and existing options have limitations. Fusion has long been considered the holy grail of energy, but progress has been slow. We saw an opportunity to take a different approach, using high-intensity lasers to unlock fusion in a way that could be more efficient and scalable.

How does your laser-driven fusion technology work?

Unlike traditional fusion, which relies on magnetic confinement or inertial confinement with large reactors, we use ultra-short, high-energy laser pulses to trigger fusion in a controlled way. This method avoids some of the issues that have slowed down progress in other fusion technologies. It allows us to generate energy without producing long-lived radioactive waste or relying on rare fuels.

What are the biggest challenges in bringing fusion energy to reality?

Fusion has been pursued for decades, but technical and engineering hurdles have made commercialization difficult. One of the biggest challenges is achieving the right conditions for sustained fusion reactions while ensuring the system is efficient and scalable. Another challenge is securing the necessary investment to move from experimental success to commercial deployment. Fortunately, we are making strong progress on both fronts.

How do you see fusion changing the global energy landscape?

Fusion has the potential to provide virtually limitless clean energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and eliminating many of the issues associated with nuclear fission, such as radioactive waste and safety concerns. It could complement renewable energy sources by providing a stable and continuous power supply, addressing one of the biggest challenges in the transition to sustainable energy.

What has been the most rewarding part of building Marvel Fusion?

Seeing our technology advance from concept to real-world experiments has been incredibly rewarding. Bringing together a team of brilliant scientists and engineers who are committed to solving one of the most important challenges of our time is inspiring.
