In Conversation with Chris Bennett, Co-Founder & CEO of Wonderschool

Could you share what inspired you to start Wonderschool?

Growing up in Miami as a first-generation American, I was fortunate to have parents who prioritized my education. They enrolled me in a quality preschool and supported me through my graduation from the University of Pennsylvania. However, I noticed that many families lacked access to similar educational opportunities for their children. This realization motivated me to create a platform that empowers educators to establish in-home childcare programs, thereby increasing access to quality early education for all families.

What were some challenges you faced in the early stages of Wonderschool?

One significant challenge was navigating the complex licensing and regulatory requirements for childcare providers. We aimed to simplify this process to encourage more educators to start their own programs. Additionally, building trust with both educators and parents was crucial. We needed to demonstrate that in-home childcare could meet high-quality standards and provide a nurturing environment for children.

How does Wonderschool support educators in establishing their own childcare programs?

We offer comprehensive assistance, including help with licensing, setting up classrooms, determining pricing, building websites, and marketing their programs. Our platform also provides training on child development, business management, and regulatory compliance. Moreover, we connect new providers with experienced mentors who offer guidance and support as they navigate the challenges of starting and running a childcare business.

How has technology played a role in shaping Wonderschool’s success?

Technology has been a fundamental driver of Wonderschool’s success, enabling us to streamline complex processes for educators and parents. Our platform simplifies everything from licensing and compliance to program management and marketing. By leveraging data analytics, we help providers optimize pricing, enrollment, and curriculum planning. Additionally, our digital tools make it easier for parents to find and enroll their children in high-quality childcare programs. Technology allows us to scale our impact efficiently, ensuring that more families have access to quality early education.

What impact have you seen Wonderschool make in communities with limited childcare options?

Wonderschool has been a game-changer for communities where childcare options were previously scarce or nonexistent. In rural areas and childcare deserts, we’ve helped educators establish in-home programs, bringing essential early learning opportunities closer to families. Parents no longer have to travel long distances or settle for inadequate childcare solutions. Additionally, we’ve empowered individuals—especially women and minority entrepreneurs—to build sustainable businesses while addressing the childcare gap. Seeing these communities thrive with increased access to quality early education has been one of the most rewarding aspects of our work.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to make an impact in the education sector?

My biggest piece of advice is to deeply understand the challenges educators, parents, and children face before building a solution. Education is a highly regulated and deeply personal field, so gaining firsthand insights through research, conversations, and direct experience is crucial. Additionally, patience and persistence are essential—change in this sector takes time, and trust must be earned. Partnering with educators, policymakers, and communities will help ensure that your solution is both effective and scalable. Lastly, always keep the mission at the center of your work. If you stay focused on making a meaningful impact, the business growth will follow.

How do you see the future of early childhood education evolving, and what role will Wonderschool play in it?

The future of early childhood education will be shaped by a combination of technology, policy changes, and increased recognition of its importance. We anticipate more personalized and flexible learning models, as well as greater support for childcare providers through funding and training. Wonderschool will continue to play a pivotal role by expanding our platform, advocating for better policies, and integrating innovative tools that enhance the quality and accessibility of early education. Our mission remains the same—to ensure that every child, regardless of their location or background, has access to the best possible start in life.
