Gorillas is a leading instant grocery delivery service that transformed urban shopping by delivering essentials in minutes. Launched in 2020, the company built a network of micro-fulfillment centers in densely populated areas, ensuring rapid access to fresh produce, pantry staples, and everyday necessities. Unlike traditional retailers, Gorillas employed its own riders, maintaining control over service quality and fostering a direct connection with customers. The business expanded rapidly across Europe, securing significant funding and forging partnerships with both global brands and local suppliers. In December 2022, Gorillas joined forces with Getir, strengthening its position in the competitive delivery market while continuing to focus on convenience, speed, and customer satisfaction.

In Conversation with Kağan Sümer, CEO of Gorillas

Could you share the inspiration behind founding Gorillas?

The idea for Gorillas emerged from a personal experience. One evening, I craved cheesecake but lacked the ingredients. The inconvenience of traditional grocery shopping led me to envision a service delivering essentials swiftly. This incident highlighted a gap in the market, prompting me to establish Gorillas in May 2020.

Gorillas experienced rapid growth since its inception. What factors contributed to this swift expansion?

Our growth stemmed from understanding urban consumers' need for quick access to groceries. By setting up micro-fulfillment centers in densely populated areas, we ensured deliveries within minutes. Additionally, employing our riders allowed us to maintain service quality and build a dedicated team.

How did Gorillas differentiate itself in the competitive grocery delivery market?

Unlike traditional retailers, we focused on immediate delivery of a curated selection of products. Our data-driven approach provided valuable insights into consumer preferences, enabling collaborations with both global brands and local suppliers. This strategy allowed us to offer relevant products and adapt quickly to market trends.

In December 2022, Gorillas was acquired by Getir. What motivated this decision?

The acquisition by Getir presented an opportunity to combine resources and expertise, enhancing our service offerings. This partnership aimed to strengthen our market position and expand our reach, benefiting both our customers and employees.

Reflecting on your journey, what challenges did you face as a CEO, and how did you address them?

Leading a rapidly growing startup involved navigating operational complexities and ensuring consistent service quality. Balancing swift expansion with sustainable practices required strategic planning and adaptability. Maintaining open communication within the team and fostering a culture of resilience were crucial in overcoming these challenges.

Could you share insights into your leadership philosophy and how it influenced Gorillas' company culture?

I believe in leading by example and staying connected to all aspects of the business. In the early days, the founding team and I actively participated in daily operations, including covering delivery shifts. This hands-on approach fostered a sense of unity and commitment among employees, creating a dynamic and motivated work environment.

What personal experiences have shaped your approach to entrepreneurship?

My background as a cyclist influenced my appreciation for efficient urban mobility, which translated into Gorillas' delivery model. Experiencing firsthand the challenges of city living inspired me to create solutions that enhance convenience and quality of life for urban residents.

How do you envision the future of the rapid grocery delivery industry?

The industry is poised for continued growth, with technology playing a pivotal role in enhancing efficiency and customer experience. Collaborations between delivery services and suppliers will likely become more integrated, offering consumers a seamless and personalized shopping experience.

What advice would you offer aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the tech-driven service sector?

Focus on identifying genuine market needs and be prepared to adapt swiftly to changing circumstances. Building a strong, cohesive team and maintaining a customer-centric approach are essential. Embrace challenges as learning opportunities and remain resilient in the face of setbacks.

Beyond your professional endeavors, what activities or interests do you pursue?

I have a passion for cycling, which not only keeps me active but also provides a unique perspective on urban environments. This hobby has been instrumental in shaping my understanding of city dynamics and the importance of efficient transportation solutions.

How do you balance the demands of leading a company with personal well-being?

Maintaining a balance requires conscious effort. I prioritize physical activity, such as cycling, to clear my mind and reduce stress. Additionally, setting aside time for reflection and personal growth helps me stay grounded and focused amidst the demands of leadership.

What legacy do you hope to leave through your work with Gorillas and future ventures?

I aim to create services that make daily life easier and urban living more convenient. Through innovation and a commitment to quality, I hope to set new standards in service delivery and inspire others to pursue impactful, customer-focused solutions.

Are there any upcoming projects or initiatives you're particularly excited about?

While I cannot disclose specific details at this time, we are exploring new ways to enhance our service offerings and expand our reach. Innovation remains at the core of our mission, and we are continually seeking opportunities to better serve our customers' evolving needs.

How do you stay informed about industry trends and ensure Gorillas remains competitive?

Staying informed involves continuous learning and active engagement with industry developments. I regularly consult a variety of sources, including market research, industry publications, and feedback from our customers and team members. This holistic approach enables us to anticipate trends and adapt proactively.

What role do you believe technology will play in the future of urban living?

Technology will be integral in shaping more efficient, sustainable, and connected urban environments. From smart infrastructure to personalized services, technological advancements have the potential to significantly enhance the quality of urban life. Embracing these innovations thoughtfully will be key to addressing the challenges of modern cities.

What motivates you to continue innovating in the service industry?

The desire to solve real-world problems and make a tangible difference in people's lives drives me. Witnessing the positive impact of our services on customers' daily routines is incredibly rewarding and fuels my commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
