In Conversation with Timo Boldt, Founder & CEO of Gousto

What inspired you to start Gousto?

I have always been passionate about food and technology. The idea for Gousto came from my personal struggle with meal planning and grocery shopping. I wanted to cook delicious, healthy meals at home but found the process time-consuming and frustrating. That’s when I realized there had to be a better way. Combining my love for food with my background in finance and data, I saw an opportunity to use technology to simplify home cooking while reducing food waste and making high-quality meals more accessible.

How has technology played a role in Gousto’s success?

Technology is at the heart of everything we do. Our data-driven approach allows us to provide personalized meal recommendations, optimize our supply chain, and minimize food waste. We’ve built proprietary algorithms that help predict demand, ensuring we only source the ingredients we need. This level of efficiency benefits both our customers and the environment. We also use technology to enhance the user experience, making it easy to select meals, manage deliveries, and discover new recipes through our platform.

Sustainability is a major focus for Gousto. What initiatives have been most impactful?

Sustainability is a responsibility we take seriously. We’ve made significant strides in reducing our carbon footprint, from using 100% recyclable packaging to sourcing ingredients responsibly. Our efforts to cut food waste have been particularly impactful. By delivering pre-portioned ingredients, we prevent millions of kilograms of food from being wasted each year. We also continue to explore ways to make our operations even more sustainable, including working towards carbon neutrality and investing in renewable energy solutions.

What challenges have you faced in scaling Gousto?

Scaling a business comes with its fair share of challenges. One of the biggest has been maintaining quality and efficiency as we grow. Ensuring that every meal kit meets our high standards while optimizing logistics and supply chains requires constant innovation. We’ve also had to adapt to changing consumer behaviors and external factors like supply chain disruptions. Our commitment to continuous improvement and listening to our customers has helped us navigate these challenges successfully.

What’s next for Gousto?

Our mission is to make home cooking simpler, healthier, and more sustainable for everyone. We are constantly working on new ways to enhance our offerings, from expanding our recipe selection to introducing more sustainable practices. We also see opportunities in further leveraging AI and automation to improve customer experience and operational efficiency. Ultimately, we want to inspire more people to cook fresh meals at home while making a positive impact on the planet.
