In Conversation with Paul Vallée, Founder & CEO of Tehama Technologies

What inspired you to venture into the tech industry?

From an early age, I was captivated by technology. This fascination led me to pursue a degree in Management Information Systems at the University of Ottawa. The dynamic nature of the tech world, with its constant evolution and potential to drive change, drew me in. I saw technology as a means to solve complex problems and improve the way we work and live.

You founded Pythian in 1997, focusing on data infrastructure and management. What motivated you to start Tehama Technologies in 2018?

During my tenure at Pythian, we faced challenges in securely managing remote teams and third-party vendors. Traditional methods were cumbersome and often lacked the necessary security measures. Recognizing this gap, we developed an internal solution that evolved into Tehama. The goal was to create a platform that ensured secure, compliant, and efficient remote work environments, addressing the needs of modern enterprises.

Tehama has undergone significant transformations, including a spin-out from Pythian and a management buyout. Can you elaborate on these transitions?

In 2018, we launched Tehama as a subsidiary of Pythian to address the growing demand for secure remote work solutions. By 2019, it became evident that Tehama had the potential to stand alone, leading to its spin-out as an independent entity. However, like many startups, we faced challenges. In early 2023, Tehama entered insolvency proceedings. Recognizing the platform's value and potential, our management team orchestrated a buyout, leading to the formation of Tehama Technologies Inc. This transition allowed us to refocus and continue our mission with renewed vigor.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of remote work. How did Tehama Technologies adapt to this shift?

The pandemic underscored the importance of secure and efficient remote work solutions. Organizations scrambled to adapt, often compromising on security. Tehama was uniquely positioned to address this challenge. Our platform provided businesses with the tools to securely onboard and manage remote teams, ensuring compliance and data protection. We saw a surge in demand and responded by enhancing our services to support organizations during this unprecedented shift.

Security and compliance are at the core of Tehama's offerings. How does the platform ensure these aspects for its users?

Security and compliance are integral to our platform's design. Tehama provides virtual desktops with built-in security controls, ensuring that data remains protected. We offer features like zero-trust network access, auditable file sharing, and real-time activity monitoring. These capabilities ensure that organizations can maintain compliance with industry standards while operating in a remote environment.

Beyond Tehama, you're known for your advocacy of universal basic income (UBI). What drives your support for this initiative?

The rapid advancement of technology brings both opportunities and challenges. Automation and AI have the potential to displace jobs, leading to economic disparities. I believe that UBI can serve as a safety net, ensuring that individuals have the financial means to adapt to these changes. It's about providing stability in a rapidly changing world, allowing people to pursue education, entrepreneurship, or other meaningful endeavors without the constant fear of financial insecurity.

Balancing your role as a CEO and your advocacy work must be challenging. How do you manage these responsibilities?

It's indeed a balancing act. Leading Tehama requires a significant amount of my time and energy. However, I believe that as leaders, we have a responsibility to engage in broader societal issues. I allocate time to participate in discussions, contribute to policy development, and support initiatives that align with my values. Effective time management and a passionate team at Tehama allow me to engage in both areas meaningfully.

Reflecting on your career, what achievements are you most proud of?

Building Pythian from the ground up and seeing it grow into a global company is a significant achievement. Similarly, developing Tehama into a platform that addresses critical challenges in the modern workplace is fulfilling. On a personal note, contributing to the conversation around UBI and advocating for policies that prepare society for future technological shifts is something I hold dear.

What challenges have you faced in your entrepreneurial journey, and how have you overcome them?

Entrepreneurship is fraught with challenges. From securing funding to navigating market shifts, each phase presents its own set of obstacles. One significant challenge was steering Tehama through its financial difficulties. It required resilience, adaptability, and a clear vision to navigate those turbulent times. Surrounding myself with a dedicated and talented team has been crucial in overcoming these challenges.

What are your aspirations for Tehama Technologies and your personal endeavors?

Our goal is to keep innovating and delivering solutions that address the needs of modern businesses. We aim to expand our reach, integrate advanced technologies, and set the standard for secure remote work platforms. Personally, I intend to remain engaged in discussions around the societal impacts of technology, advocating for policies that ensure equitable growth and opportunities for all.

Thank you for sharing your insights. Any final thoughts you would like to leave with our readers?

Embracing change is essential in today's world. Whether it's adopting new technologies or rethinking societal structures, we must be proactive and thoughtful in our approach. At Tehama, we're committed to facilitating secure and efficient remote work. On a broader scale, I encourage everyone to engage in conversations about our collective future, ensuring that technological advancements benefit all members of society.
