In Conversation with Ren Ito, Co-Founder & COO, Sakana AI

What inspired you to co-found Sakana AI?

I wanted to help build an AI company that truly understands Japan’s needs. AI development has been advancing rapidly worldwide, but not all solutions are designed with Japan’s industries, language, and business culture in mind. We saw an opportunity to create AI that is not only cutting-edge but also deeply integrated into the way businesses operate here. Our goal is to make AI practical, efficient, and accessible for companies of all sizes.

How does Sakana AI differentiate itself from other AI companies?

We are not just developing AI for the sake of innovation. Our approach is about creating AI that works for Japan, whether that means optimizing models for the Japanese language, making AI compatible with existing systems, or ensuring compliance with local regulations. We focus on practical applications, not just research, so that businesses can implement AI without unnecessary complexity.

What are some of the biggest challenges in AI adoption in Japan?

AI adoption here is slower than in some other regions, and that’s not because of a lack of interest or technology. Businesses deal with regulatory concerns, legacy systems, and cultural preferences that make implementation more complex. Many companies are hesitant to overhaul existing operations, so AI has to integrate seamlessly into what they already have. That’s why we develop solutions that enhance rather than disrupt.

What industries do you see benefiting the most from AI in Japan?

AI can add value across many sectors, but we see strong potential in manufacturing, finance, and retail. Japan has always been a leader in precision engineering and automation, so AI-driven optimization in factories makes perfect sense. In finance, AI can improve risk assessment and fraud detection while ensuring compliance. Retail businesses can leverage AI for smarter inventory management, personalized customer experiences, and better decision-making.

What does AI democratization mean for Sakana AI?

AI should not be limited to a few major corporations with massive budgets. Our vision is to make AI accessible to mid-sized companies, startups, and even local governments that want to improve efficiency. We want businesses to see AI as a tool they can use, not something too complex or expensive to adopt. By focusing on usability and integration, we help businesses implement AI in a way that makes sense for them.

What role does ethical AI development play in your work?

Ethical AI is non-negotiable. AI should be transparent, reliable, and safe. Businesses rely on AI to make decisions, and those decisions need to be explainable and fair. Data privacy is another major factor. We make sure our solutions meet the highest standards of security so that companies can trust AI to handle sensitive information responsibly.

How do you see the future of AI in Japan evolving?

Japan has the potential to be a major AI powerhouse. The country has a strong foundation in technology, engineering, and precision manufacturing. What’s needed is a push toward AI adoption that aligns with these strengths. I believe that as businesses see the benefits AI can bring to their operations, adoption will accelerate. AI won’t replace human expertise—it will enhance it.

What motivates you personally in this journey with Sakana AI?

I want to see AI make a real impact. It’s one thing to develop advanced models, but the real satisfaction comes from seeing AI solutions improve efficiency, streamline processes, and help businesses succeed. I enjoy working on problems that matter and seeing how technology can solve real-world challenges. That’s what drives me every day.

What advice would you give to companies hesitant about adopting AI?

Start small and focus on practical applications. AI doesn’t have to be a full-scale transformation overnight. Identify areas where automation or data-driven insights can improve efficiency, then scale from there. AI is a tool to enhance business performance, not something that should feel overwhelming or disruptive. The right approach makes all the difference.

What’s next for Sakana AI?

We are continuously refining our AI models and expanding our reach. Our focus remains on making AI accessible, practical, and valuable for businesses in Japan. As more industries realize the benefits of AI, we aim to be at the forefront, ensuring that AI adoption is smooth, effective, and aligned with real business needs.
