Interview Excerpts
Could you tell us about the inspiration behind SUMA Wealth and why you decided to start it?
The inspiration for SUMA Wealth came from a deep understanding of the challenges that our Latinx community faces when it comes to financial literacy and inclusion. Growing up, I saw how intimidating and inaccessible financial topics could be, especially for underserved communities. I knew there had to be a better way—one that was not only educational but also engaging and culturally relevant. We wanted to create a platform that empowers our community to take control of their financial futures in a way that resonates with their lived experiences.
SUMA Wealth focuses on financial empowerment for the Latinx community. Why do you think this mission is so important right now?
It’s crucial because the Latinx community is one of the fastest-growing and most influential demographics in the global economy, yet financial barriers still persist. We’re often overlooked by traditional financial institutions, and the tools or resources available don’t always address our unique needs. Our mission is to close this gap by demystifying finances and providing accessible, culturally relevant solutions that inspire financial confidence.
How does SUMA make financial topics engaging for a community that might find these subjects intimidating?
We spice up what many consider dry topics by using entertainment, humor, and storytelling. For instance, we create interactive virtual events, videos, and content that feel relatable and fun. We also make sure that everything we offer reflects the cultural nuances of our audience, whether it’s through language, shared values, or familiar experiences. Financial literacy doesn’t have to feel like a chore—it can be empowering and even enjoyable.
SUMA takes a holistic approach by combining digital media, fintech, and virtual experiences. How do these elements work together?
Each of these elements serves a specific purpose in achieving our goal. Digital media helps us reach and inspire our audience with culturally relevant content. Fintech allows us to offer practical tools that users can incorporate into their daily lives, like budgeting and investment resources. Virtual experiences create a sense of community and make learning interactive. Together, these pieces make financial education accessible, actionable, and, most importantly, impactful.
You mentioned creating culturally relevant content. Could you give an example of how this resonates with your audience?
Absolutely. For example, we’ve created content around themes like the financial responsibilities of multigenerational households, which is a common experience for many in the Latinx community. By addressing these shared realities, we show that we understand our audience and are here to provide solutions that are practical and relatable. It’s about speaking their language—not just literally but culturally.
What challenges did you face in building SUMA Wealth, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges was addressing the widespread mistrust of financial institutions within our community. To overcome this, we focused on building trust through transparency and cultural authenticity. Another challenge was making complex financial topics easy to understand without oversimplifying. We achieved this by blending education with entertainment to make learning approachable and engaging.
What kind of feedback have you received from users so far?
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Many users have told us that SUMA has helped them feel more confident about managing their finances, which is exactly what we set out to do. Hearing someone say, “I finally understand how to invest,” or “I paid off my debt because of your guidance,” is incredibly rewarding. It reminds us why this work is so important.
SUMA uses entertainment as part of its approach. Why do you believe this is an effective strategy?
Entertainment is powerful because it captures attention and keeps people engaged. Let’s face it, traditional financial education can be boring. By making the experience enjoyable, we not only teach but also motivate our audience to take action. When people are entertained, they’re more likely to absorb information and feel excited about applying what they’ve learned.
What are some of the key financial topics you prioritize, and why?
We focus on areas like investment, debt management, and wealth creation because these are crucial for building financial stability and long-term prosperity. Many people in our community face barriers in these areas due to lack of access or knowledge. By addressing these topics head-on and breaking them down into actionable steps, we help our users take control of their financial journeys.
How does SUMA leverage technology to support its mission?
Technology allows us to reach people where they are, whether through mobile-friendly platforms, interactive tools, or virtual events. It also enables us to personalize the experience, so users get information and resources that are most relevant to their unique circumstances. Technology is a key driver of accessibility and scalability for us.
What does financial empowerment mean to you personally?
To me, financial empowerment is about freedom and choice. It’s the ability to make decisions that align with your values and goals without being held back by financial stress or limitations. It’s also about creating opportunities not just for yourself but for your family and community.
What’s next for SUMA Wealth?
We’re focused on expanding our reach and continuing to innovate. We want to create even more tools and content that resonate with our audience and address emerging challenges. Ultimately, our goal is to become the trusted source for financial empowerment in the Latinx community, ensuring that everyone has the knowledge and resources to thrive.
What legacy do you hope SUMA Wealth will leave behind?
I hope SUMA will be remembered as a catalyst for change—an organization that broke down barriers and reimagined what financial inclusion looks like. More importantly, I want our community to feel proud of the financial progress they’ve made and empowered to pass that knowledge and wealth to future generations.
What advice would you give to others looking to make an impact in financial inclusion?
My advice would be to listen to the community you’re trying to serve. Understand their needs, challenges, and aspirations, and design solutions that truly address them. Authenticity and trust are everything. It’s also important to be creative—don’t be afraid to think outside the box to make your message resonate.
