We Have Stayed True to Our Mission of Bringing Accessible Healthcare to All, and We Believe that the Micro-Hospital Business Model is the Future of Healthcare: Dr. Tom Vo of Nutex Health Inc.
“Our highly skilled staff focuses on delivering concierge-level inpatient and outpatient care to the community without the wait you would find at large hospitals.”
As a practicing physician with a long career in emergency medicine, Dr. Tom Vo, founder and CEO of Nutex Health Inc., recognized the inefficiencies in patient care that needed to be addressed. The solutions included accessibility and convenience, less time in the waiting room, more one-on-one time with doctors, and compassionate, individualized care tailored specifically to the patient. With these demands in mind, he set out to create a solution: the micro-hospital. A micro-hospital is a smaller-scale hospital with all the ancillaries and capabilities of larger hospitals that provides personalized inpatient and outpatient services without the hassle and restrictions of large-scale hospital systems. Due to its smaller scale, this type of hospital can be built more easily and closer to the main population, making it much more convenient and accessible. This vision came to fruition in 2011 when Dr. Vo founded Nutex Health Inc., and since then, he and his team have opened and operated more than 20 micro-hospitals and ERs in 10 states.
Nutex Health Inc. is headquartered in Houston, Texas.
SME Business Review contacted Dr. Vo for an interview to gain insights into his innovative approach to healthcare and the impact of micro-hospitals on the industry. Here’s what he had to say.
Interview Excerpts
As a leading healthcare management and operations company, what are Nutex Health’s key focus areas?
Our hospitals and ERs offer a range of inpatient and outpatient services, including 24/7 emergency, inpatient, adult, and pediatric care, imaging and laboratory services, and other outpatient procedures. Nutex operates fully functioning, licensed micro-hospitals that have all the basic functionalities of a much larger hospital. We partner with the best physicians at the local level, and we work with them to operate the hospital. The physicians handle direct patient care, and Nutex Health manages all the back-office support, including in-house business development and marketing, operations coordination, legal, human resources, accounting, and billing and collections departments, to establish a sustainable and profitable hospital. From there, our highly skilled staff focuses on delivering concierge-level inpatient and outpatient care to the community without the wait you would find at large hospitals.
How does Nutex Health leverage its Hospital and Population Health Management divisions (IPAs) to improve efficiency and patient care across its healthcare services?
Nutex’s hospital and population health management divisions work together synergistically to improve efficiency within the ER and hospitals. The IPAs are essentially a collection of outpatient clinics that send patients to our hospital for care and vice versa. Because both the hospital and the clinics are on the same team, patient care is coordinated and much better. In addition, the cost of care is lower due to better efficiency and alignment between the clinics and the hospitals.
We own and manage four IPAs in California, Miami, Houston, and Phoenix, and we have plans to open one to two IPAs per year to help complement our hospitals, including Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Smith, and Tulsa.
What strategies has Nutex Health employed to drive its recent growth, and how do you anticipate these will impact the company’s future expansion?
Our business development efforts at Nutex Health continue to focus on community events, building relationships with local primary care and specialist physicians, schools, urgent care centers, and large local employers, while simultaneously using Google Ads, social media, and billboards as our primary marketing mediums. Ultimately, the key for our hospitals is to grow and continue providing concierge-level access and care to our patients and to be a resource in the communities and markets we serve. Excellent patient care is our best marketing through word-of-mouth and 5-star reviews. Our reputation in our markets continues to grow. In addition to our focus on increasing ER volumes, which began toward the end of 2023, one of our major initiatives has been to shift our service mix to increase inpatient and observation volumes in our hospitals. As part of this initiative, our hospitals did a lot of work locally, partnering with local hospitals and specialists to provide additional care to our existing patients instead of transferring them out to other hospital systems. We are starting to see the financial benefits of this change.
Will Nutex Health be launching any new services that we should be aware of?
We are continuing to grow our inpatient services and piloting some new services in some of our hospitals including behavioral health, personal injury, and wellness services.
Could you provide an example of a recent success story where Nutex Health’s services significantly improved patient outcomes or operational efficiency?
Nutex has countless stories where patients arrive, are triaged and treated without delay, and are discharged in a very fast and efficient manner. For example, if you research every one of our hospitals online, you will see that our reviews are consistently 4.8 or above. This is very unusual in healthcare. In essence, our patients are consistently satisfied with our service across the board. As any doctor will tell you, the quicker a patient is treated, the better the outcome.
Do you have any final thoughts or comments before we conclude?
We are excited to see what the next few years have in store for Nutex Health. We believe the concierge model we deliver will continue to grow as patients demand better and timelier healthcare. We have stayed true to our mission of bringing accessible healthcare to all, and we believe that the micro-hospital business model is the future of healthcare. We see there are multiple indicators that the increased demand for hospitals and emergency services is not slowing down any time soon. With the graying of the population and the so-called ‘silver tsunami’ that is expected to hit healthcare, we feel that we are in a very good position to help meet this demand for more concierge-level accessibility for a long time.
