What inspired you to start Tractable?

I have always been fascinated by the potential of artificial intelligence to solve real-world problems. During my time in academia and industry, I saw how machine learning could transform decision-making in fields that rely heavily on visual assessments. Insurance and automotive repair stood out as areas where AI could make an immediate impact by improving accuracy, reducing processing times, and cutting costs. That realization led to the creation of Tractable.

What was the biggest challenge in bringing AI into the insurance industry?

Insurance has been built on traditional processes that rely on human expertise and paperwork-heavy workflows. Introducing AI required changing mindsets and proving that the technology could be as reliable as, if not more reliable than, manual assessments. Building trust took time. We had to demonstrate that AI not only speeds up processes but also enhances accuracy and consistency. Working closely with industry leaders and showing real-world results helped bridge that gap.

How does AI improve claims processing?

AI processes images of damage in seconds, providing estimates that would typically take much longer through manual review. The system learns from millions of real cases, constantly refining its ability to detect patterns and assess severity. Insurers receive immediate insights, allowing them to settle claims faster. Repair shops get the information they need without delays, ensuring that vehicles are back on the road sooner. Faster decisions benefit everyone involved.

What role does data play in AI’s effectiveness?

Data is everything. The accuracy of AI depends on the quality and volume of information it learns from. We process vast amounts of images from real-world claims, feeding our models with diverse cases to improve reliability. The more the system learns, the better it gets at recognizing even the smallest details that could affect an assessment. Data integrity and security are always top priorities because we operate in industries where precision matters.

How does Tractable balance automation with human expertise?

AI provides recommendations, but human oversight remains essential. Experts validate AI-generated assessments to ensure accuracy, especially in complex cases. AI handles high-volume, repetitive tasks, freeing professionals to focus on cases that require deeper analysis. Instead of replacing human expertise, AI augments it by offering insights that improve decision-making. It’s about creating a synergy where technology and human judgment work together seamlessly.

What industries beyond insurance can benefit from Tractable’s technology?

Any field that requires visual damage assessment can leverage AI. We’re already working with property damage assessments, helping with disaster recovery efforts by providing fast evaluations after hurricanes, earthquakes, and other catastrophic events. The potential goes beyond damage analysis. AI can assist in construction, manufacturing quality control, and infrastructure monitoring. The ability to process and interpret visual data at scale has broad applications across multiple industries.

What advice would you give to entrepreneurs entering the AI space?

Find a real problem that AI can solve. Too often, startups focus on the technology first without considering the practical applications. AI should be a tool that enhances efficiency and accuracy in meaningful ways. Understand the industry you’re entering, work closely with stakeholders, and be patient. Adoption takes time, especially in industries with established processes. Proving value through measurable results is the key to success.

How do you approach leadership and innovation at Tractable?

I believe in fostering a culture where curiosity and collaboration drive progress. Innovation doesn’t happen in isolation. The best ideas emerge when diverse teams come together, challenge assumptions, and experiment. I encourage our engineers and researchers to think beyond the obvious, test new concepts, and learn from every iteration. Staying ahead in AI requires a mindset that embraces change and continuous improvement.

What keeps you motivated?

Seeing how AI impacts people’s lives. When claims are processed faster, when disaster recovery efforts move more efficiently, when businesses operate with fewer delays, it reinforces why we do what we do. Knowing that the technology we build is making a tangible difference keeps me excited about the future.

What excites you most about the future of AI in claims and repair processes?

The ability to keep pushing boundaries. AI is evolving rapidly, and we’re constantly discovering new ways to refine accuracy, improve processing speed, and unlock new use cases. Automation in claims and repair processes has already saved businesses time and money, but we’re just scratching the surface. Future advancements will make these processes even smarter, benefiting businesses and consumers alike. Seeing the real-world impact of AI motivates our team every day.
