Our Mission is to Build a Vibrant Future for People and the Planet: Andrew Adams, CIO of Nexii

Nexii is a construction company that designs and manufactures fast-assembly buildings to tackle rising construction costs, tight schedules, and environmental concerns. Using its unique material, Nexiite, the company creates sustainable buildings with lower carbon emissions and minimal waste. Nexii’s innovative methods focus on speed, quality, and eco-friendly solutions, offering high-performance structures with less impact on communities and the planet.

SME Business Review reached out to Andrew Adams, CIO of Nexii, to discuss the company’s innovative approach to sustainable construction, the role of technology in revolutionizing building practices, and how Nexii is addressing environmental challenges in the industry. Here’s what Mr. Adams had to say.

Interview Excerpts

Could you tell us about the inspiration behind starting Nexii?

The idea for Nexii came from recognizing the significant challenges in the construction industry, including waste, inefficiency, and high carbon emissions. I’ve always believed there had to be a better way to build, one that was faster, cleaner, and more sustainable. We wanted to develop a solution that could meet the needs of clients while also addressing the urgent need to combat climate change. That’s how the concept of Nexiite and our rapid-assembly process came to life.

What role does Nexiite play in achieving sustainability goals?

Nexiite is at the core of our mission. It’s a proprietary material that replaces traditional concrete, offering similar strength and durability but with a fraction of the carbon emissions. By reducing embodied carbon in our buildings, we’re addressing one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases in the construction industry. On top of that, the energy efficiency of buildings constructed with Nexiite helps reduce operational carbon over time, which further supports global sustainability goals.

How does your rapid-assembly process change traditional construction methods?

Our approach focuses on prefabrication. We manufacture Nexiite panels offsite in a controlled environment, which ensures precision and quality. These panels are then transported to the construction site, where they’re assembled quickly. This not only reduces waste but also minimizes disruptions in the community. Projects that used to take months can now be completed in weeks, without compromising quality or sustainability.

How do you ensure the quality of your buildings despite the speed of assembly?

Quality is non-negotiable for us. Every panel is rigorously tested during the manufacturing process to ensure it meets or exceeds industry standards for safety and durability. Additionally, our digital tools allow us to optimize designs before manufacturing even begins, reducing the chances of errors. The result is a building that performs as well or better than those constructed using traditional methods.

How does Nexii address the issue of waste in construction?

Construction waste is a massive problem. With traditional methods, significant amounts of materials end up in landfills. By prefabricating our panels, we generate near-zero waste during the manufacturing process. Our panels are also recyclable at the end of their life, so nothing goes to waste. It’s about creating a circular economy within the industry.

Could you share your perspective on how Nexii supports local communities?

Supporting communities is a key part of our mission. By shortening construction timelines, we reduce disruptions like noise and traffic, which is especially important in urban areas. Our manufacturing facilities also create stable jobs for local workers. We provide training in advanced construction techniques, equipping people with skills that are in demand as the industry evolves.

How does Nexii balance cost-effectiveness with environmental sustainability?

Sustainability and cost-effectiveness are not mutually exclusive. By reducing material waste, speeding up construction timelines, and improving energy efficiency, we help clients save money throughout the entire lifecycle of a building. The upfront investment in sustainable materials like Nexiite is offset by long-term savings, making our approach both economically and environmentally beneficial.

What challenges have you faced in scaling NEXII’s operations?

Scaling any innovative solution comes with challenges. One of the biggest hurdles is educating the industry about the benefits of sustainable construction. Many stakeholders are used to traditional methods, and it takes time to build trust in new technologies. That said, once clients see the results, they’re often eager to adopt our approach for future projects.

How do you see the role of technology in Nexii’s growth?

Technology is integral to what we do. From advanced design software to data analytics, we use digital tools to optimize every step of the process. This allows us to deliver precision and efficiency at scale. Technology also helps us provide clients with detailed insights into the environmental impact of their projects, which fosters transparency and builds confidence.

On a personal note, what inspired your passion for sustainable building?

My passion comes from a deep concern for the environment. Growing up, I was always fascinated by how human innovation could solve big problems. When I saw the impact of the construction industry on climate change, I knew I wanted to be part of the solution. It’s incredibly fulfilling to work on something that benefits both people and the planet.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs in the sustainable tech space?

Focus on creating solutions that address real problems. Sustainability isn’t just a trend; it’s a necessity. If you can align your business goals with environmental and social impact, you’ll build something that matters. Also, don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo. The most meaningful innovations come from questioning traditional ways of doing things.

How do you unwind after a busy day leading a company like Nexii?

I am a big believer in work-life balance. Spending time outdoors helps me recharge. Whether it’s hiking or simply walking around the neighborhood, being in nature reminds me why sustainability is so important. I also enjoy reading and exploring new ideas, which keeps me inspired for the work ahead.

Where do you see Nexii in the next decade?

I envision Nexii continuing to lead the charge in sustainable construction. We aim to expand our operations globally, providing clients with innovative building solutions that are better for people and the planet. It’s about creating a lasting impact, not just for the construction industry but for the world as a whole.
