Tandem Health Cuts Clinician Paperwork by Automating Medical Notes

Tandem Health, a Stockholm-based company founded in 2023 by Lukas Saari and Oliver Åstrand, is transforming the way clinicians document care. The company’s AI-driven “clinician copilot” listens during consultations and generates draft medical notes. This system removes the need for clinicians to spend additional time after appointments on record-keeping.

The platform integrates with physicians’ existing systems. It automatically transcribes dialogue, drafts structured notes, and feeds them into the electronic health record. According to Lukas, this can shrink documentation time from 5–10 minutes to just 1–2 minutes.

Tandem Health raised $9.5 million in a seed round led by Northzone, with participation from investors tied to OpenAI and DeepMind. The company serves around 50 clinics across Sweden and aims to expand its reach in Europe.

AI That Fits Busy Clinics

Tandem Health’s product uses generative AI, including OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Whisper for speech recognition, to create accurate and context-aware documentation. The system adapts to different clinical templates and specialties to ensure appropriate content and language .

Lukas said early testing showed transcription systems worked at about 60% accuracy. The company invested in improving speech recognition for medical terms and adapting to each clinic’s documentation style.

Founders With Deep Expertise

Lukas is a former McKinsey leader in Nordic healthcare analytics and spent time at Spotify working with machine learning. Åstrand, Tandem’s CTO and co-founder, previously conducted AI research at GoogleX and Uber before launching AI products at startups.

These backgrounds informed Tandem’s focus on industry-grade reliability and real-world usability. Their goal is to build a tool clinicians trust and want to use daily.

Clinician-Centric Growth

Tandem operates within a niche of five European markets—Sweden, Germany, France, Spain, and the UK—where over 500 care organisations already use its platform. Surveys show clinicians spend too much time on documentation, and Tandem’s product aims to restore that lost time.

In June 2024, Tandem won the “Growth Company of the Year” award at Almedalsveckan in Visby, Sweden. Judges praised its rapid execution and impact on reducing clinician burden. Lukas credited this success to the company’s swift progress in a market that typically resists change.

Integration and Expansion

Unlike standalone apps, Tandem integrates directly into clinics’ electronic health record systems. Users don’t need to switch tools. The passive design—no extra steps, buttons, or apps—has helped drive adoption among busy practitioners

Tandem is also partnering with Eterno in Germany to roll out its AI scribe across clinics. In the UK, it is working with NHS integrator Accurx to bring services to thousands of GP practices.

Building Credibility With Real Results

Clinicians report saving up to two hours per day and improving session quality because they can fully focus on the patient. Psychologist Louise Lind told the company “I expected AI would save time, but I did not realize how much it would improve the quality of my sessions.”

Despite relying on generative AI, Tandem is careful about accuracy and data security. It does not store audio files and complies with GDPR and applicable laws.

Financing and Forward Momentum

Northzone’s backing follows Tandem’s seed round and reinforces confidence in the clinician copilot concept. The funds are earmarked for continued model training, product development, and expansion across Europe.

Lukas said the company is targeting large healthcare institutions or record-system providers to act as anchor customers. These partners will help deploy the solution at scale across countries.

Real‑World Impact and Vision

Tandem Health’s solution offers a tangible response to healthcare’s documentation burden. By restoring time to clinicians, it boosts patient interaction and reduces burnout risks. Its cross‑market traction shows the model can succeed across languages and healthcare systems.

Lukas said expanding to larger institutions is a priority. The goal is for Tandem’s copilot to become a standard option in Europe’s principal health systems within the next year.

Tandem Health isn’t promising to revolutionize healthcare singlehandedly. But by creating a tool that quietly handles one of clinicians’ most persistent pain points, it is setting a standard for how AI can deliver practical and humane value in health care.
