SME Business Review reached out to Evan Harris, Co-founder & CEO of Peppy, for an interview to discuss the company's innovative approach to employee health and wellbeing, its plans for the future, and how Peppy is reshaping the way businesses support their employees’ health. Here’s what he had to say.

Interview Excerpts

Peppy has a clear focus on employee health and wellbeing. What motivated you to address underserved areas like menopause, fertility, and men’s and women’s health?

I believe that many aspects of health and wellbeing have been underappreciated or overlooked in traditional employee benefit programs. These areas, like menopause, fertility, and men’s and women’s health, affect people in deeply personal ways, but often don’t get the attention they deserve in the workplace. I wanted to create a service that not only acknowledged these challenges but also provided real solutions. The motivation was clear — to create a space where people could access the support they need, not just for physical health, but for emotional wellbeing as well.

Your company offers clinically-led services delivered via an app. How does this model work in terms of providing personalized support?

Our app makes healthcare more accessible and more flexible for employees. We connect users with experienced, specialist nurse practitioners who provide one-on-one consultations. This way, people aren’t just receiving generic advice—they are getting guidance that is specific to their needs and challenges. Whether it’s a question about fertility treatments, menopause management, or any other area of health, the app ensures employees have expert support when they need it most. We’ve made it easy to get personalized consultations and on-demand resources, so individuals can take control of their health with confidence.

Feedback from your clients seems to be a driving factor behind your developments. Could you tell us more about how you’ve listened to your clients and what changes are coming as a result?

Absolutely. Listening to our clients has been at the heart of our evolution. A lot of organizations told us that while they loved the clinical services we offered, they wanted more visibility and engagement with their benefits. They wanted a more integrated way to manage everything in one place. That’s why we’re launching the Peppy Employee Benefits Platform in January 2025. The platform combines AI technology with our clinically-led services, making benefits management easier and more personalized for each employee. This new tool will streamline everything, ensuring employees get the support they need when they need it, all from a single, user-friendly platform.

The new Employee Benefits Platform seems like a big step forward. How do you think this will impact companies and their employees?

This platform will be a game-changer for both companies and their employees. For businesses, it simplifies benefits management, reducing the administrative burden that often comes with managing employee wellness programs. For employees, the platform ensures that they receive hyper-personalized support, tailored to their specific needs. The AI-powered platform will help ensure that every employee gets the right guidance at the right time, whether it’s related to health services or accessing other benefits. It will harmonize the benefits experience, making it far more efficient and impactful.

It’s clear that Peppy is addressing some unique health challenges that employees face. How do you see Peppy’s role evolving in the future?

We’re always thinking about how we can improve and expand the support we provide. Right now, we’re focusing on the areas of health that are often neglected, but we recognize that health and wellness cover a broad spectrum. We see Peppy continuing to grow by adding more specialized services, expanding our platform’s capabilities, and improving the user experience. Our goal is to be the go-to solution for companies looking to take employee wellbeing seriously. I also believe that, as more companies realize the importance of mental health, Peppy will play a bigger role in providing not just clinical care, but holistic wellbeing support.

Could you share any challenges you’ve faced while building Peppy, and how you’ve overcome them?

Building Peppy has definitely had its challenges, particularly when it comes to creating a system that balances clinical expertise with technology. We wanted to ensure that our app offered personalized support while also remaining easy to use and accessible. It’s been a process of constant feedback and improvement, both from clients and our own team. One major challenge has been ensuring that our platform remains flexible enough to meet the diverse needs of employees while maintaining the high standards of clinical care. But each challenge has been an opportunity for growth, and I’m proud of how far we’ve come.

With your expertise in employee wellbeing, how do you think businesses can improve their approach to employee health?

The first step for companies is recognizing that employee health is more than just physical health—it’s mental health, emotional support, and access to the right resources at the right time. Too often, employee benefits programs are one-size-fits-all, and they fail to meet the unique needs of individuals. Companies can improve by offering tailored solutions that address specific life stages or health concerns. I also think it’s important to create a culture where employees feel comfortable talking about their health without fear of judgment. A proactive, comprehensive approach to health is key to creating an environment where employees can thrive.

What’s next for Peppy? What should we expect in the coming months?

In the coming months, our main focus is the launch of the Peppy Employee Benefits Platform. We’re excited to see how it will reshape the way companies manage employee benefits and offer personalized support. Beyond that, we’ll continue to build on the success of our app and expand our services. I believe that as more companies begin to prioritize employee health and wellbeing, Peppy will play a significant role in helping them achieve their goals. We’re just getting started, and I am looking forward to what’s ahead.
