Whether You're in Cryptography, Gaming, or Finance, Our Goal is to Provide a Solution That Fits Seamlessly into Your Operations: Ramy Shelbaya, CEO of Quantum Dice
“There are a number of industries that benefit from our technology. Cryptography is probably the most obvious one.”

Ramy Shelbaya, Co-Founder & CEO, Quantum Dice
Quantum Dice is an award-winning, fast growing quantum technology and photonics developer backed by world leading innovation from the University of Oxford. The company specializes in quantum random number generators (QRNGs) that produce unbiased, true random numbers. These RNGs play a critical role in modern communication technologies by generating cryptographically secure keys to meet the needs of both enterprises and individual users.
SME Business Review reached out to Ramy Shelbaya, co-founder and CEO of Quantum Dice, for an interview to learn more about the company’s groundbreaking work in quantum technology and its vision for the future of secure communication. Here’s what he had to say.
Interview Excerpts
Quantum Dice is an innovative venture that emerged from Oxford University’s quantum optics laboratory. Could you tell us about the journey from university research to launching a successful company?
Our journey began with a deep understanding of quantum mechanics, particularly in the field of quantum optics. We saw an opportunity to leverage the unpredictable nature of quantum systems to generate true randomness, something that traditional methods of random number generation couldn’t achieve. The transition from research to commercialization was challenging but exciting. We worked closely with Oxford's lab to refine the architecture behind our quantum source of entropy. Once we had a viable prototype, we knew we had something that could solve critical issues in data security, cryptography, and gaming. That was when we made the decision to spin out Quantum Dice as a company.
How does Quantum Dice’s patented DISCTM protocol differ from traditional random number generation methods?
Traditional random number generators often rely on algorithms to create numbers, and while they can be effective, they can also be predictable and biased. What makes our DISCTM protocol so unique is that it taps into the quantum nature of particles, where the randomness is inherent and cannot be predicted. Our system generates random numbers based on quantum processes, which are inherently unpredictable. This ensures that the randomness we produce is secure and far less vulnerable to attacks or manipulation compared to classical methods.
What industries benefit most from Quantum Dice’s secure random number generation?
There are a number of industries that benefit from our technology. Cryptography is probably the most obvious one. Secure encryption depends on random numbers to generate keys that protect sensitive data. In a world where cyber threats are growing, the ability to produce truly random numbers that can’t be predicted or replicated makes all the difference in protecting information. The gaming industry also benefits greatly from our solution. Ensuring fair play in digital gaming—whether in online casinos or lotteries—requires random outcomes that are unbiased and free from manipulation. Financial systems, too, rely on random number generation for secure transactions, which is another area where our technology plays a crucial role.
Quantum computing is an emerging field. How do you see Quantum Dice’s technology interacting with future advancements in quantum computing?
Quantum computing is definitely an exciting field. It has the potential to revolutionize everything from healthcare to logistics. One of the challenges in quantum computing is ensuring that systems remain secure, especially when it comes to generating random numbers for encryption or decision-making. Our technology provides the kind of truly secure randomness that could be essential for the future of quantum systems. As quantum computing becomes more prevalent, the need for secure, unpredictable randomness will only grow, and we believe our technology will be integral to that.
With the growing demand for secure digital systems, how do you ensure your solutions are accessible to businesses of all sizes?
Accessibility is key for us. While the technology we use is complex, we designed our products with ease of integration in mind. We want businesses—whether they’re startups or large enterprises—to be able to easily adopt our solution without needing to be quantum experts themselves. Our hardware is compact and efficient, and it can be integrated into a company’s existing infrastructure with minimal effort. Whether you're in cryptography, gaming, or finance, our goal is to provide a solution that fits seamlessly into your operations.
What advice would you give to entrepreneurs who are working on cutting-edge technology or venturing into new scientific fields?
My advice would be to stay persistent and be prepared for a long journey. The path from research to commercialization can be challenging, but the key is to stay focused on the problem you're solving and ensure that your solution is practical and scalable. Surround yourself with a great team, and don't be afraid to ask for help or feedback. Also, be ready to adapt. Technology and markets change quickly, so being flexible and open to pivoting is essential. Above all, never lose sight of the impact your work can have on the world.
What does the future look like for Quantum Dice, and where do you see the company in the next five years?
We have big plans for the future. In the next five years, we see Quantum Dice expanding into even more industries as the need for secure, quantum-powered randomness increases. As quantum technologies evolve, we expect our product to be at the forefront of this innovation, helping to lay the foundation for secure quantum computing systems. We’re also looking at expanding our offerings, developing more solutions that cater to the specific needs of our clients. Our goal is to become the trusted leader in secure randomness, shaping the future of digital security while meeting today’s critical needs.
