SAN FRANCISCO, June 10, 2025 OpenAI has reached $10 billion in annual recurring revenue, nearly doubling from around $5.5 billion just a year ago, according to a company spokesperson.

The figure includes earnings from consumer services such as ChatGPT, its business-focused tools, and API usage. The company currently serves more than 500 million weekly active users and 3 million paying business customers across its offerings.

This milestone arrives two and a half years after the release of ChatGPT, the tool that brought OpenAI into public consciousness and quickly turned it into a central player in the artificial intelligence market.

“The speed at which we’ve grown reflects the scale of demand for AI that works,” said the spokesperson.

Climbing Fast, Spending Big

OpenAI is not only growing fast but spending heavily. Its ambitions come with substantial operating costs, as the company continues to invest in infrastructure and talent needed to build and refine its AI models.

While the company has not disclosed specific figures on operating expenses or profitability, it is widely understood that OpenAI is burning through billions each year. These funds go toward recruiting top-tier technical talent and securing the computing capacity required to support and expand its services.

The revenue jump suggests OpenAI has managed to convert user interest into meaningful income, but the financial path ahead remains steep. The company is targeting $125 billion in annual revenue by 2029. Reaching that goal would require continued adoption of its tools in enterprise and consumer markets alike.

Market Traction Across User Segments

OpenAI’s products now reach a broad audience. ChatGPT is used by individuals for writing, learning, and productivity tasks. On the enterprise side, companies are integrating OpenAI’s API into workflows, customer support systems, and software development tools.

The number of weekly active users, over half a billion, underscores how deeply the company has embedded itself in daily digital interactions, both personal and professional.

Big Goals, Bigger Expectations

With revenue growing quickly and usage spreading widely, OpenAI is under pressure to keep pace. Industry expectations are high, and so are internal benchmarks.

The spokesperson did not confirm whether OpenAI is profitable or close to it, but said the company is focused on scaling responsibly and building tools that are safe and useful.

For now, OpenAI appears to be balancing growth and ambition with caution. It has reached a major financial marker, but whether it can sustain that momentum through the rest of the decade will depend on how well it continues to meet the needs of users, and how efficiently it can operate while doing so.
