In Conversation with Dr. Demetra Adams Davis, CEO of Gordavi LLC

Congratulations on being selected as one of the ‘20 Best CEOs of the Year 2024’! How does it feel to receive this recognition?

It is an incredible honor to be selected as one of the Best CEOs of the Year 2024. It is humbling, and, in my opinion, it comes with a daunting responsibility to others. When one rises to a level of devotion, loyalty, and zeal for the art of leadership as being deemed one of the best in their field; it comes with a certainty in knowing that this measurement or standard for “Best” will not stop here. As CEOs, we know the challenges of running a business: finances, compliance, and strategy. As leaders, it is actually our responsibility to keep raising the bar of expectations of how leadership reveals itself while performing those tasks and simultaneously molding, mentoring, and coaching those coming after us. A true testament of a leader is the multitude of those leaders rising up behind them whose performance outshines them. Therein lies success.

How do you approach challenges and setbacks as a CEO, and what strategies do you employ to overcome them?

First and foremost, my initial approach to challenges is to pray. Psalm 25:4 “Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.” I never presume to have the answers to life’s challenges or to my business’s challenges (smiling). Some of them are very heavy. But nothing is too heavy for Him. After taking things to God in prayer, I write down the issue and different approaches. I think of various approaches because I have to know that my decisions are not emotional or reactionary and thus, more than one approach must be developed. Then, benefits, opportunities, with methodologies are considered, taking finances, time-frames, teams and other significant details into consideration.

Depending on the situation, it is presented to the appropriate team. I ask them for their input on solutions. This is done prior to offering my own solutions. Why? Because they may have some ideas or opinions that far exceed what I have even considered. “Surround yourself with people much smarter than you. This is one way to make you shine. Ensure that you give them credit for their input. This is the way to make THEM shine!”

After presenting the situation and receiving the team’s input, I then share my ideas. Conferring amongst the group to obtain their input for strategy and solutions is an important aspect. We may even have a vote if the categories for implementation are closely aligned but have variances. All in all, I guess to give the short answer, it takes prayer, thought, and consideration of strategy, financial planning, and team input. This has been an effective formula.

It is important, however, with any challenge, to keep the overall short term and long-term strategic goals, mission, and vision top of mind. Any reactive decision or spending could be detrimental to those strategic organizational fundamental values, portfolio additions, or investment goals and cause a great set-back.

Your career journey has been quite diverse, from serving in the United States Air Force to transitioning into healthcare and now business consulting. Can you share some insights into how these experiences have shaped your leadership style and approach to problem-solving?

My journey through diverse career paths, from the Air Force to healthcare and ultimately to leading Gordavi, LLC, has been a profound learning experience. I firmly believe in extracting wisdom from every encounter, viewing both successes and setbacks as opportunities for growth. In the Air Force, I observed varied leadership styles, realizing the complexity of leadership within hierarchical structures. Transitioning to healthcare, I encountered a multitude of roles, each commanding respect for distinct reasons - whether it was the expertise of Nurse Educators or the strategic prowess of Directors. Inspired by these leaders, I aspired to ascend the ranks myself, eventually achieving my goal. My career trajectory led me to specialize in Case Management, fueled by a desire to understand the intricacies of healthcare delivery, the quizzical nuances, and the insurance payment systems. Pursuing further education in Health Care Administration, I honed my skills in negotiation and gained insights into healthcare policy, compliance, and procedure thereby, enriching my ability to advocate for patients.

In leadership, I learned the importance of empathy and effective communication, both with patients navigating the healthcare system and with team members seeking guidance in their careers. Recognizing the potential in nurturing new talent, I made it a priority to mentor and empower individuals embarking on their professional journeys. Now, as the CEO of Gordavi, LLC, I apply these lessons daily. I foster a culture of collaboration and open communication, engaging my team in decision-making processes and prioritizing their growth and development. Embracing mentorship myself, I strive to continuously improve and stay aligned with the company’s vision.

Central to my approach is the belief in putting God first, fostering a supportive environment, and infusing our work with joy and camaraderie. These principles, distilled from years of experience and learning, guide me in leading Gordavi towards sustained success. In essence, my career journey has been a tapestry of lessons, each thread contributing to the fabric of my leadership philosophy. It’s a journey marked by humility, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to continuous improvement - qualities that I bring to my role at Gordavi, LLC every day.

What sets Gordavi apart from other business consulting firms, and what core values or principles guide your approach to consulting?

At Gordavi, LLC, we approach business consulting holistically, addressing all aspects of our clients’ operations. Whether it’s process improvement, team dynamics, or technological advancement, we believe in considering the entirety of the business rather than isolated components. Our goal is to ensure comprehensive solutions that eliminate the need for repetition or for multiple consultants in one ‘house’ sort to speak. Gordavi aims to address all client needs, beginning with the end goal in mind. Recognizing the increasing importance of technology in modern business, we launched Gordavi Tech as a subsidiary in 2023. This move allows us to provide clients with a seamless, one-stop-shop experience for their technological needs. Through strategic partnerships with industry leaders like Dell Technologies, HP, and Cisco, we offer a full spectrum of expertise to meet diverse client requirements. We continue to expand our network of partnerships to further enhance our ability to serve clients comprehensively.

Collaboration and partnerships are often crucial in the consulting industry. Could you discuss some of the key partnerships or collaborations that have been instrumental in the success of Gordavi?

Gordavi, LLC, has incredible partners. We have worked hard to secure partnerships that will help us leverage our assets, and our services. Our network makes us stronger by adding their expertise and at times their motivation. Our goal is to do the same for them in return. We partner with Skyler Corporation International, an accounting firm based in Orlando; FL. Skyler provides timely, accurate and professional services to our clients in the area of bookkeeping and tax support. The CEO, Jae Bre, also presents financial literacy classes under her self-authored course entitled “20 Steps To Start”, a jam-packed yet easy to follow course on business ownership, credit health, and financial priorities. I also partner with a networking group, M3 Linked. This organization facilitates networking with organizations either in a single state or in multiple states across the nation, in a virtual format. Creating an atmosphere that is conducive for networking and growth is what M3 Linked is all about. Additionally, maintaining connections with other coaches is a big part of my personal and professional development and balance as we are of like mind and support each other in our common goals of assisting others as they move forward one step at a time in bringing their dreams to fruition. I also have a mentor. He keeps me grounded with the Word of God and by sharing his vast experience in life during the trauma and trials of the civil rights movement. I marvel at how he has remained true to himself, and I dig deep to do the same in my life. The Reverend Dr. Joseph Jackson, Jr., Leader of the Tougaloo Nine, is a highly regarded and respected man who keeps me grounded, shares his wisdom, and has the laughter and song of one who certainly knows God in a special way. I love that and am honored to call him friend.
