SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., August 10, 2026 — Situational Awareness has invested $400 million in Source Foundry, a startup developing technology designed to make chip manufacturing faster and less expensive. The latest investment brings Situational Awareness’s total investment in Source Foundry to $500 million, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The investment comes after a difficult period for Situational Awareness. The AI-focused hedge fund suffered losses as AI infrastructure stocks declined in recent months. At the end of July, the fund reportedly sold most of its public portfolio to Citadel, the investment firm founded by Ken Griffin. Situational Awareness kept its shares in Anthropic. Its assets under management reportedly fell from about $20 billion to $10 billion.
Source Foundry Targets Chip Manufacturing Costs
Source Foundry was founded by Stanford researchers Abdulmalik Obaid and Joe Burg to develop new ways to make semiconductor production faster and less expensive. Chip manufacturing requires expensive equipment, specialized facilities, and significant engineering resources. Production can also take considerable time, which can limit how quickly companies can increase chip output.
The demand for chips has grown as artificial intelligence companies build larger computing systems. More AI workloads require greater computing capacity, increasing demand for advanced semiconductor hardware. Source Foundry is developing manufacturing technology that could help address some of the cost and production challenges facing the industry. The $400 million investment gives the company substantial capital to develop its technology and pursue its manufacturing plans.
Investment Follows Major Portfolio Sale
The Source Foundry investment follows a major reduction in Situational Awareness’s public-market holdings. At the end of July, the fund reportedly sold most of its public portfolio to Citadel. The fund retained its Anthropic shares, giving it continued exposure to one of the leading private AI companies.
Situational Awareness faced losses as AI infrastructure stocks fell. The fund had built much of its investment strategy around artificial intelligence and the companies providing the computing resources needed to develop and operate AI systems. Those investments produced strong reported returns during the fund’s early period, but losses later reduced its assets under management. The portfolio sale marked a major change in the fund’s public-market exposure.
AI Infrastructure Remains a Major Focus
The Source Foundry investment shows that Situational Awareness continues to make large bets on artificial intelligence infrastructure. Instead of buying only publicly traded AI companies, the fund is putting capital into private companies that develop technologies for the industry. Semiconductor manufacturing is an important part of that ecosystem because AI systems depend on large amounts of computing hardware.
The investment also gives Situational Awareness exposure to an area that could benefit from long-term growth in AI computing demand. Companies developing AI systems need access to increasingly large amounts of computing capacity. That demand depends on the availability of chips and the ability of manufacturers to produce them at a reasonable cost. Source Foundry’s work therefore fits within the wider infrastructure needs created by AI development.

A $500 Million Commitment to Source Foundry
The latest $400 million investment brings Situational Awareness’s total commitment to Source Foundry to $500 million. The size of the investment makes Source Foundry a significant private holding for the fund. It also gives the startup substantial financial resources as it develops its semiconductor manufacturing technology.
Situational Awareness was founded in 2024 by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher who was in his mid-twenties when he launched the fund. He had no previous trading experience when the fund began. Early returns were reportedly strong, but the fund later faced losses as AI infrastructure stocks declined. The Source Foundry investment shows that, despite those losses and the sale of most of its public portfolio, Situational Awareness continues to place large bets on AI-related infrastructure. For Source Foundry, the $500 million commitment provides capital for its manufacturing technology. For Situational Awareness, the deal keeps a substantial portion of its investment strategy tied to the physical infrastructure required for artificial intelligence.
