Google has announced that its Bard AI chatbot can now effectively address questions regarding YouTube videos. Despite initially acquiring the capability to analyze YouTube videos through the September launch of the YouTube Extension, the chatbot has advanced to offer accurate responses specifically related to the content of a video.
“We’re taking the first steps in Bard’s ability to understand YouTube videos,” the company wrote on Bard’s updates page. “For example, if you’re looking for videos on how to make olive oil cake, you can now also ask how many eggs the recipe in the first video requires. We’ve heard you want deeper engagement with YouTube videos. So we’re expanding the YouTube Extension to understand some video content so you can have a richer conversation with Bard about it.”
Prior to this recent update, the YouTube Extension for Bard was limited to locating specific videos, such as asking the chatbot to find amusing videos. However, with the latest enhancement, users can now pose specific questions about the content within videos. For instance, if you're watching a travel video and come across a place of interest, you can inquire with Bard about the location of that particular place.
The announcement comes just two weeks following YouTube's initiation of trials for innovative generative AI features. Among these features is an AI conversational tool designed to respond to inquiries about YouTube content. Additionally, a new functionality has been introduced to provide summaries of topics found in the comments section of a video.
The responses from the conversational tool are generated by extensive language models that utilize data from both YouTube and the broader web. Users have the ability to pose questions about the video they are actively watching, engaging in a real-time conversation with the AI as the video unfolds. Simultaneously, the comments summarizer tool employs generative AI to systematically arrange and present the key topics discussed in the comments section, providing users with a concise overview of the ongoing discussions.
The enhancement coincides with Google expanding access to Bard for teenagers in the majority of countries globally. In a blog post, the search giant stated that teens now have the opportunity to utilize the tool to "find inspiration, explore new hobbies, and address everyday challenges." Bard can assist teens with significant matters, such as recommending universities to apply to, or more leisurely topics, like guidance on learning a new sport.
