The First Attempts at Technological Learning

The earliest known effort to integrate technology into education can be traced back to the early 20th century. Sidney Pressey, a professor of psychology at Ohio State University, created what is widely considered the first teaching machine in the 1920s. His mechanical device resembled a typewriter and allowed students to answer multiple-choice questions. If they selected the correct answer, they could move forward. This invention was designed to automate the testing process and provide immediate feedback, a radical idea at the time. Pressey believed that technology could reduce the workload of teachers while helping students learn at their own pace.

Despite the ingenuity of his invention, Pressey struggled to gain widespread acceptance. B.F. Skinner, a leading behavioral psychologist, took Pressey’s ideas further in the 1950s. He introduced a more advanced teaching machine based on his theory of operant conditioning. Unlike Pressey’s version, Skinner’s device provided structured lessons that guided students through a sequence of learning tasks. The University of Illinois developed PLATO (Programmed Logic for Automated Teaching Operations), a computer-based learning system that allowed students to engage in interactive lessons. PLATO was revolutionary for its time, featuring touch-sensitive screens, discussion forums, and real-time feedback. The system was used by students across different educational levels, from elementary school to university programs.

PLATO laid the groundwork for future EdTech innovations. It demonstrated that computers could serve as more than just supplementary tools—they could actively facilitate learning. The 1980s and 1990s saw a surge in computer-based learning programs. Apple and IBM played a key role in bringing personal computers into classrooms. Apple’s donation of computers to schools fueled a shift toward digital education. Educational software companies such as The Learning Company and Scholastic began developing programs tailored for young learners, covering subjects like math, reading, and science. The emphasis on interactive learning encouraged schools to explore new methods of instruction beyond textbooks and blackboards.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further cemented EdTech’s role in education. With schools and universities forced to shift online, platforms like Zoom, Google Classroom, and Microsoft Teams became essential tools for virtual instruction. The sudden transition highlighted both the potential and the challenges of digital learning, prompting further investment in EdTech solutions. Governments and private companies accelerated efforts to improve digital accessibility, ensuring that students in underserved communities could participate in online education.

As technology continues to evolve, EdTech is expected to expand its reach through innovations like virtual reality, blockchain for credential verification, and AI-driven assessments.
